Companies like Westmoreland specialized in pressing opaque white glass into intricate, traditional patterns that echoed nineteenth-century opulence. The grape and vine motif was particularly popular, symbolizing abundance and country charm in post-war suburban households.
Westmoreland Glass Company, operating out of Grapeville, Pennsylvania, had a long history of fine glassware production dating back to the late nineteenth century. Their skilled artisans utilized complex multi-part iron molds to achieve sharp relief details on heavy, opaque pieces. Today, these mid-century milk glass items are actively collected by enthusiasts of vintage Tobacciana and American pressed glass.
