Plumb Crazy Vintage is run by me, Joan Plumb. I've always loved the thrill of the hunt — the estate sale early mornings, the tucked-away antique malls, the joy of spotting something special that deserves a second life. I collect vintage, antique, and delightfully unique pieces that have character and make me smile. Every piece in the shop is chosen by hand and ready for a new home. I pack with care and ship the first business day after purchase. Your purchase helps fund my local food bank.

Alaskan Scrimshaw on Ancient Ivory - Handmade in Homer Alaska by Jack of Arts - Made in Alaska
Back of card explains:
ALASKAN SCRIMSHAW - 10,000 years ago, woolly mammoths roamed the Alaskan tundra. For thousands of years, walrus have lived in Alaska's icy seas. After natural deaths, the ivory tusks were deposited in the earth. Today, gold miners and Eskimos dig up this ivory. We cut, grind, and polish it to a high luster. We then carefully engrave the surface by hand with designs of Alaskan wildlife and flowers. Finally, we color the lines with oil paint to bring out the engraving, leaving a long-lasting image.
This is fossilized ancient ivory, not modern elephant ivory. It is ancient mammoth / walrus tusk ivory that has been fossilized in the Alaskan earth for thousands of years.
