VINTAGE WWII ERA C-54 SKYMASTER BRASS AIRPLANE ASHTRAY - USAAF 4-ENGINE TRANSPORT
You are looking at an original 1940s brass airplane desk ashtray featuring the Douglas C-54 Skymaster.
HISTORY:
The C-54 Skymaster was the military version of the famous DC-4 four-engine commercial airliner and was the first four-engine transport to serve with the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II. In 1942 the Army took over the DC-4 production line for the war effort. These aircraft carried troops, cargo, presidents and staff worldwide and later became the backbone of the Berlin Airlift. This is NOT a bomber - it is the heavy transport workhorse of WWII.
ABOUT THIS ASHTRAY:
This is the classic "Airtray" style made by Victor Pastushin Co. of Santa Monica, CA and similar makers from the late 1930s to early 1950s for Douglas Aircraft, airlines, and military officers clubs.
DETAILS:
• Aircraft: Douglas C-54 Skymaster / DC-4 / Navy R5D - 4 engine transport
• Material: Heavy cast metal, appears to be pot metal / white metal with original brass / gold wash
• Size: Wingspan approx 5 inches, Length approx 4 inches, Height approx 2.75 to 3 inches. Ashtray bowl approx 4.5 inches wide.
• Markings: No airline markings - typical of military issue pieces
• Weight: Heavy, solid - approx 1.5 lbs without wood base
CONDITION:
Good vintage estate condition, uncleaned as found. All 4 propellers intact, no breaks, cracks or repairs to plane or bowl. Original gold wash shows heavy wear, patina, tarnish and surface dust consistent with age and use - see close up photos. Bowl shows use. Please see all 8 photos for exact condition. I have not tried to polish it - buyer can leave the nice old patina or gently clean.
This would make a great addition to a WWII aviation collection, USAAF collection, pilot desk, or vintage tobacciana collection. Also nice as a desk catchall.
You will receive the brass airplane ashtray. Wood base is for display purposes only. It is not included.
