VINTAGE EGYPTIAN REVIVAL KING TUT / PHARAOH FILIGREE PENDANT - 1920s-1970s - KING TUT EXHIBIT ERA

Nice vintage Egyptian Revival pendant from the King Tut craze - hexagon filigree with large central Pharaoh head.

HISTORY:

Egyptian Revival jewelry had two major waves:

1. 1922-1930s Tutmania - After the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, Egyptian motifs were blended with Art Deco geometry - filigree, Pharaoh masks, scarabs, and sphinxes became very collectible.

2. 1976-1979 King Tut Exhibit Era - The blockbuster museum exhibit "Treasures of Tutankhamun" toured the US from November 1976 to April 1979 - Washington D.C., Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from Dec 15, 1978 to April 15, 1979. The Met commissioned 100 pieces of commemorative jewelry duplicated from King Tut's tomb for the exhibit, and companies like Trifari, Monet, Napier, and Kenneth Jay Lane produced bold Egyptian Revival pieces in the 1970s. 

This pendant style was made in both periods. Construction with twisted wire filigree and hollow domed back leans to earlier 1920s die-stamp filigree, but this hex pattern was reproduced during the 70s Tut tour as well. Selling as vintage Egyptian Revival circa 1920s-1970s. 

DETAILS:

• Approx 2" wide x 2.25" tall including top hook - see ruler photo

• Central face: Pharaoh Tutankhamun with striped nemes headdress and false beard

• Border: Twisted rope wire filigree with bead and leaf accents

• Top has simple bent wire hook to hang on chain

• Back shows domed hollow construction where mask is mounted

• No hallmark - brass base with original gold wash

CONDITION:

Good antique/vintage condition. Gold wash is heavily worn with tarnish and brassy showing - as shown in close-ups - uncleaned estate condition. No breaks to filigree. Hook slightly bent. See all 7 photos.
