Vintage Japanese Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll, circa 1960s-1970s Showa era. Hand-turned natural wood with a warm honey lacquer and the sweet sleepy face collectors love, closed eyes with lashes and a tiny red mouth.
She is dressed as a traveling girl in a hand-painted kimono with soft pink and white chrysanthemum blossoms on delicate branches. The obi is deep purple with a gold bow and tiny plum blossoms. Her black hair is pulled into a traditional mage topknot with a bright red kanzashi ornament on the side.
She carries two travel pieces:
• a large flat sugegasa straw hat held in front, painted with red and white daisies, green leaves, and a black center knob
• a closed purple umbrella on her back, hand-painted with small beige plum blossoms
Turned in one piece, no moveable head. No artist signature visible on the base. A charming example of Japanese folk art, perfect for kokeshi collectors, Japandi shelves, or vintage Asian decor
