Hi Everyone! I am Amy, one of the Moderators here at Secondhandsquad.net. Part of that role is to assist with any questions you may have, so fire away! I am from Columbus, Ohio and love thrifting and perusing our local antique stores! I enjoy pieces that remind me of my grandparents and love the hunt of finding unique treasures to bring into my home. While I love the reselling business, I find my joy in giving new life to old pieces and sharing that with others.
The Westmoreland Glass Company produced glassware in Grapeville, Pennsylvania, beginning in the late nineteenth century. They were well known for their opaque white glassware, often called milk glass, which featured traditional molded patterns like grapes, panels, and animal figures. These items were pressed into iron molds and finished by hand, allowing the company to create detailed dimensional reliefs such as the clusters of fruit seen on this piece.
Households commonly placed dishes like this on coffee tables, sideboards, or dressing tables to hold small candies, mints, or personal trinkets. The lidded containers kept their contents clean and protected while adding a decorative touch to domestic interiors during the mid-twentieth century. As tastes in home decor shifted toward modern minimalism, the production of such ornate pressed glassware gradually declined and eventually ceased.
