The Westmoreland Glass Company made glassware like this in Grapeville, Pennsylvania, starting in the late nineteenth century. They produced these pieces during the mid-twentieth century as decorative household items using opaque white glass pressed into ornate molds. Their skilled workers pressed molten glass into detailed metal molds to create the rich fruit reliefs and scalloped rims that defined their popular patterns.
Families used these covered dishes on living room tables and sideboards to hold small candies, mints, or nuts during visits from guests. They served as both functional serving containers and decorative accents in dining rooms and parlors across homes in the country. Their use declined as modern home decor preferences shifted away from traditional pressed glass toward minimalist styles.
