American glass companies like the Fenton Art Glass Company in Williamstown, West Virginia, manufactured decorative opalescent and opaque white tableware during the mid-twentieth century. These pieces were produced to meet the post-war demand for charming, textured table accessories that could add a decorative touch to everyday dining. Workers made them by pressing molten glass into molds that created the raised bumpy texture and then hand-crimping the rims into distinctive star shapes while the glass was still hot.
Families used these sets during breakfast or afternoon tea service to hold cream and loose sugar on the dining table or sideboard. As dining habits changed and formal table service became less common, these decorative glass sets shifted from functional tableware to cherished display pieces. Their production eventually slowed as tastes shifted away from opaque white glassware toward modern minimalist designs.
