The decorative use of polished mineral spheres became immensely popular during the mid-to-late 20th century, drawing on a long tradition of decorative stone carving. Craftsmen utilized lathe-turning and tumbling techniques to transform raw serpentine, marble, and jade into smooth geometric forms that highlighted natural veining. These pieces were often paired with ornate metal stands cast in brass or bronze, frequently incorporating traditional Asian motifs like dragons or foo dogs to appeal to Western interior design trends.
Such decorative objects were widely imported from workshops in East Asia and India during the 1970s and 1980s, finding a ready market in interior boutiques and department stores. The combination of tactile green stone and gleaming cast brass lent an air of worldly sophistication to study shelves, sideboards, and executive desks. Today, they remain cherished vintage decorative accents that reflect the eclectic interior tastes of the late twentieth century.
