This petite blue and white porcelain box is a traditional Chinese ink pad box, also known as a chop box, historically used in calligraphy for holding red ink paste used with personal or official seals and stamps. The circular form features an intricate hand-painted dragon motif in classic cobalt blue on bright white porcelain, drawing from centuries of traditional Chinese decorative symbolism.
The piece is housed in its original fabric-covered presentation box lined with vivid red silk, designed to both protect the porcelain container and elevate its presentation as a scholar’s object. These types of boxes were commonly associated with writing tables, calligraphy sets, and scholarly arts, blending utility with decorative craftsmanship.
