Pressed glass, a technique developed in the mid-19th century, allowed for the mass production of decorative glassware with intricate patterns. This method involved pressing molten glass into a mold, creating items that were both affordable and aesthetically pleasing to a wider audience. Many American glass companies, such as Fenton, Duncan & Miller, and Indiana Glass, became renowned for their pressed glass lines, often featuring hobnail, diamond, or floral motifs.
This particular piece, a footed compote or bowl, exemplifies the popular decorative styles of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Such items were commonly used for serving fruits, candies, or as decorative centerpieces on dining tables and sideboards. The diamond and starburst pattern is a classic motif found on many pressed glass pieces from this period, reflecting a taste for ornate and textured designs.
