Hi Everyone! I am Amy, one of the Moderators here at Secondhandsquad.net. Part of that role is to assist with any questions you may have, so fire away! I am from Columbus, Ohio and love thrifting and perusing our local antique stores! I enjoy pieces that remind me of my grandparents and love the hunt of finding unique treasures to bring into my home. While I love the reselling business, I find my joy in giving new life to old pieces and sharing that with others.
Delftware, named after the city of Delft in the Netherlands, is a style of tin-glazed pottery that was produced from the 17th century onwards. It is characterized by its blue and white decoration, often featuring chinoiserie, biblical scenes, or Dutch landscapes and maritime motifs. The production of Delftware flourished during the Dutch Golden Age, with many factories competing to produce high-quality ceramics for both domestic use and export. Boch Frères, a Belgian pottery manufacturer founded in 1841, also produced ceramics in the Delft style, often referred to as 'Belgian Delft'. Their pieces are known for their quality and decorative appeal, frequently incorporating traditional Dutch motifs. This particular plate, with its depiction of a sailboat and building, is a classic example of the maritime themes popular in Delft-inspired pottery.
