MA-based collector with French roots and a love of early 20th-century décor. Inspired by New England antiques and a life among flowers and gathered objects, I share glassware, ceramics, and metal pieces with timeless character.
The backstamp contains three distinct markings: The White Ware Factory Mark (Top): The green underglaze stamp reading "B & Co. FRANCE" was used by the factory of Léon Bernardaud & Co. starting around 1900. This mark specifies who manufactured the raw, white porcelain blank in Limoges, France. The Decorator Mark (Middle): The red overglaze mark reading "L. BERNARDAUD & Cº LIMOGES" indicates that the piece was decorated (the floral transfers, hand-painting, and heavy gold gilding added) directly by the Bernardaud company's own artists before shipment. The Retailer Mark (Bottom): The red scroll mark reading "HIGGINS & SEITER NEW-YORK" indicates that this plate was commissioned for and sold exclusively by Higgins & Seiter. They were a prestigious, high-end premier china and glass emporium located in the historic Ladies' Mile Historic District of New York City during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Because Higgins & Seiter encountered severe financial trouble and went out of business by World War I, it tightly anchors the production window of this piece to between 1900 and 1915.
